There's an Icon Crit Meme happening right now and I'd really appreciate it if I got some concrit on my icons. Anything you have to say; I can take it. I feel like I've been struggling pretty hard lately [lately being "the last three to six months"] on how my icons look and if I'm just doing the same thing over and over because I'm comfortable with it. This would be a great time to give me some concrit and, look, it's completely anonymous. Yay. There's no chance of me hunting you down and going "But. Why?" in a moment of weakness. : ) Plus, if there's something you've been thinking, would like to suggest, but didn't want to risk hurting my feelings, now's the perfect opportunity.

This mix originally started as a response to the upcoming Heroes and Villains challenge at fanmix. I planned, as they were next to each other, to submit the Heroine EP the last day of that theme and the Villainess EP the first day of that theme. As such, the mixes are meant to work together, starting with the Heroine EP 'Starting A Riot,' but that's now changed so that the Villainess EP 'Blood On Our Hands' is first instead.

01. Blood On Our Hands - Death From Above 1979

There was blood on all the shoes you've worn // from the people you've been stepping on.

"I think Isabelle did it." - Richard Tyler.

Isabelle's life begins in blood and violence. At six months old she kills three men who are chasing her family and starts a chain of events that lead to the death of dozens, if not hundreds. I chose this song to begin the Villainess EP because this is Isabelle's legacy, as a villainess. From the time she's a superpowered infant to when she becomes a childlike adult, Isabelle is designed and intended to destroy.

02. The Wrong Way - Beauty's Confusion

You'll get burned and after one time most would just say lesson learned // But you keep holding on, hope you're breaking down, but you're the one that's breaking now.

Isabelle's relationship with Jordan Collier. Make one choice and she's his savior, make the other and she's his destruction. Isabelle was created to destroy the 4400 movement Jordan is spearheading but, at first, Jordan trusts her, even believes her to be the messiah that will bring him into power. When she gets him killed through a faked vision, his faith in her righteousness is shattered.

Isabelle is taken by the Marked and given the choice to regain her powers fully for the first time since they were stripped from her. But she rejects the offer because her powers are only designed to kill and she's not that person anymore. Only the threat of taking her father's life can get her to change her mind.

This will be an uncertain time for us, my love //

Still under blackmail from the Marked, Isabelle is forced to choose between protecting herself and killing the only person who's ever loved her despite all the horrible things she's done. Kyle refuses to believe she can kill him and, in the end, that faith in her is enough that she can't.

Isabelle's failed in her assignment to kill Kyle and she knows now that the only option left is to face the Marked, despite the fact it will probably kill her, and try to make amends to Jordan Collier for what she's done to him. Isabelle's actions enable Jordan Collier and Tom Baldwin -- the champions of the future and the 4400 she was meant to destroy -- to go free, for the Marked to be destroyed, and for Promise City to flourish into the city it was meant to be. But the cost is her life.

Notes: Made for Directed Study project in Film (for minor). It's intended to be understandable, as a narrative, without having seen the film or having any familarity with the universe. Also, it was made in five hours and I will very likely go back and adjust some things so concrit is welcomed. My eighth vid and the only one over 3 minutes, this was a very new experience for me and I'm not entirely happy with the results -- Windows Movie Maker doesn't like weaving audio together nearly as much as I wanted it to.

Okay, so tielan is hosting a Stargate: Atlantis John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan relationship or friendship THING-a-thon over here. Comments are now unscreened so you can see what other people are requesting and offering. I know at least some of the people that watch this community are into Stargate: Atlantis and if you can't manage ten icons of the absolutely gorgeous Joe Flanigan (John Sheppard) and Rachel Luttrell (Teyla Emmagan) then, really, what sort of artist are you? *grins*

If you're afraid that you're just not that into John/Teyla, don't be: the thing-a-thon accepts friendships and doesn't allow character bashing of ANY character. So, if you're an artist who doesn't write and you'd like a fic exploring John & Teyla's friendship without bashing, say, Rodney or Ronon out of the picture, this is the place to be. The deadlines are more than generous too! The fics aren't due until July 4th at the latest.

I will be participating in LJ's Content Strike, which will begin in about an hour (running from 4PM Thursday to 4PM Friday in my timezone, which you can check out here).

I participate in this boycott not because I think it will do anything, but because I support fandom, I support the economic and social practice of boycotting, and I reject SUP's economic decisions regarding the LJ model they conceptualize (and the straight out dumb of their information regarding what Basic and Paid accounts were pre-6A). The former economics' major in me cries; the future media theory grad student twitches.

I will not post, nor respond to comments, until after 4PM tomorrow afternoon Los Angeles time. See you all then! (And I'll be spending the time off LiveJournal working on graphics.)

So, over in the Stargate: Atlantis fandom, photomanips regarding female John and Rodney are making the rounds (again) and this time, since I wanted some practice with photo manipulation anyway, I decided to join in.

Overall, I think I'm pleased with the results, at least for a first real attempt, though I do wish I had been able to figure out the trick to adding wrinkles without a tablet (or, at least, using PSP rather than the more manip-friendly PhotoShop). She seems a little young, maybe more in the era of Major Sheppard rather than Lt. Col. Sheppard because of it, but overall... I think I like it.

Thoughts, comments, etc. are appreciated.

Oh, and P.S., for those of you who watch nihil_est: I've begun posting my graphics at lickourlegs with likegunfire, frostthepie, fixing, and iulieki. I'm even currently taking icon requests.

Back when zoicite was Member of the Month over at icon_crack I requested an icon from her in her very unique style. She made two, one with Starbuck and the other with Apollo. This one is my favorite. I love girls with guns. Starbuck, Teyla, Rommie, Megan, Claire, River, the list goes on and on, and is made of awesome. Now I have a ton of Teyla icons from SGA and Gwen Raiden icons from Angel, but back in the day this was my Girls With Guns Are Awesome icon and I still have a soft spot for it.

I'm not one hundred percent sure but I think that back when I was practicing text I did a series of text-only icons for verstehen. This and (stupidity is my co-pilot) are my favorite out of that batch. I use one, she uses the other.

Both are sort of inside jokes in the sense that when trying to come up with text to practice with, we started talking about fandom. And what we came up with is that (a) we're ALL dorks here and (b) there are a ton of stupid people in fandom who don't realize we're all dorks here. I think it's important that we can laugh at ourselves and at our own dorkiness, take a step back and realize we're discussing television shows so to speak. It's not that it's not serious business (hell, I plan to get a Ph.D. in Comparative Media Studies within the decade) but sometimes you need that step back.

This is from the first batch of Carnivale icons I ever made. The coloring on the whole batch was an evil son of an ass, but out of all the icons I made this and (Ben Lacks Social Grace) were my favorites. One because I think 'Save Yourself' really represents the message of the show Carnivale and the other one because emotionally stunted characters are my one true fannish love.

newkidfan is, hands down, one of the most talented and innovative fannish graphic makers I have ever seen, if not the most. S/he has made some truly amazing pieces, based off different themes and works (including a whole series about the SGA team as trees, which isn't as cracktastic as it sounds). Back in 2006, s/he participated in the_reel and made SGA art based off the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds." I adore Hitchcock, especially his non-Psycho work, and this icon is from that set. I also used to use another icon from that set:

I picked this icon out in particular because part of what attracts me to Stargate: Atlantis is how quirky and unusual John Sheppard is. The 'bird on head' icon represents that perfectly to me. It's so contextually strange that everytime I use it I still laugh a little bit, wondering what the person who sees it is going to think.

Like newkidfan, I adore _omnivore_'s work for the originality and quirkiness in it. This is actually one of the more normal icons s/he's made and I have used others in the past (and probably will in the future). I picked this one because, at the time, I was looking for an Aeryn Sun (from Farscape) icon and I chanced upon this one somewhere. I really adore it because I love the pose and the coloring in the icon. It's a good representation of who the character is to me, outside of her relationship with John Crichton, and I really wanted an Aeryn icon rather than an Aeryn/John one. I also love blue.

So, spiffydaze has an open "suggestion" post where you can basically request icons or prod her/him into iconning things that s/he doesn't typically do. When the post first showed up, I ... Wait, I'm looking back now and that's how I got some of my Ellen Harvelle and other Supernatural icons, as well as this lovely icon (Bullet With Butterfly Wings, guess my age, I dare you! *grins*), but that's not how I got the Karl Urban icons. Hmph.

Anyway, at some point, spiffydaze took requests (perhaps for icon_crack) and I jumped at the chance to provide images of one of my favorite actors, Karl Urban. I adore this New Zealand actor, especially his earlier, indie stuff before he started playing up the last action hero looks of his, and I realized I didn't have any Karl Urban icons. Around this time, two or three other people were taking requests so now I have a number of KU icons I use in rotation, but that's neither here nor there. This is my favorite of the icons s/he made for me, using an image taken from my favorite KU photoshoot. It's cool and clean, with crisp lines and a little quirkiness (muscular hot man + pastel blue flower = FTW) and awesome text.

This is one of my more random acquisitions. I happened to notice a post with this icon and fell in love immediately. "Shooting makes me feel better" is a line said by Aeryn Sun as she gives birth while she, her husband, and her closest friends are all under siege. It's hilarious, fitting, and a great character moment. The text itself is so well done; this is sort of text-only icon I only wish I could make, and there's technically a tiny Aeryn near the bottom from a S1 episode. (A shot which I happen to love.)

Because some of these are designed for the Zune player they're in jpg format, save one Supernatural banner, and as such might seem slightly pixelated at full size. When displayed on a Zune they do not look pixelated.
